What is the difference between gold-filled and 14k gold?

Gold-filled carries a far thicker gold layer than laminate, pressure-bonded to a base metal. It is made for everyday wear and holds its colour for years with basic care. Karat gold, hallmarked 14k: 58.5% gold. It is the everyday standard for fine jewelry, balancing a warm gold colour with the strength to be worn daily.

What is gold laminate, and will it last?

A layer of gold bonded over a base metal — what most people call gold-plated. It gives the colour of gold at a fraction of the price, and the layer is thin, so how you treat it decides how long it lasts. The gold layer softens and thins with wear, and eventually the base metal shows through. That is normal for laminate, not a defect — a piece worn daily will show it sooner than one saved for occasions.

Is your silver sterling silver (925)?

Silver hallmarked 925: 92.5% silver with a little copper for strength. Like all silver it reacts with the air and slowly darkens. The tarnish sits on the surface and polishes off. A warm, slightly darker tone over time, deepest in the recesses of a design. Under any plated finish it is silver throughout, so plain sterling can be polished bright as often as you like. Sold as silver. We do not hold a hallmark or assay for each piece, so it may be solid sterling or silver plated over a base metal. Ask us before ordering if you need solid silver or must avoid nickel.

How do I care for my jewelry?

Jewelry goes on last and comes off first. Dress, do your hair, put on perfume and lotion, let them dry — then the jewelry. At night, take it off before you wash your face. Sleeping in a piece bends chains, stretches elastic and grinds facets against the pillow. Give it a quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth when you take it off. That one habit removes most of the skin oil, sweat and residue that would otherwise dull it overnight.

Can I wear my jewelry in the shower or the pool?

Take jewelry off before the shower, the pool, the beach and the gym. Chlorine and salt attack every metal finish, sweat is mildly acidic, and the cord or elastic inside a beaded piece holds moisture long after the outside looks dry. Stainless steel is the most forgiving: a rinse and a dry after a swim is all it asks. Gold-filled handles incidental water — washing your hands is fine — but not the pool or the sea. If anything else gets wet, dry it right away with a cloth and let it finish drying in the air before it goes back in the pouch.

How do I choose a necklace length?

A chain length is usually the whole chain laid flat, clasp to clasp. Where it falls depends on the neck and shoulders it sits on; this is roughly where each length lands on most adults. 16 in: Sits at the base of the neck. 18 in: Falls at the collarbone. 20 in: A little below the collarbone. 24 in: At or just above the bust. Between two lengths? Hold a piece of string at the length you are thinking of, clasp end to clasp end, and look in a mirror.

How do I find my bracelet size?

Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist just below the wrist bone, snug but not tight. No tape? Use a strip of paper, mark where it meets, and lay it against a ruler. Then add ½ in for a close fit, or 1 in for one that moves. That is for a bracelet with a clasp. A stretch bracelet on elastic rolls on over the hand and sits close, so read its size against your wrist as it is.

Can I order a custom piece?

Custom work starts with a conversation, not a checkout. Tell us what you have in mind — a stone you already own, a piece you want remade, an idea you can only describe in words. We'll talk through the design and the cost, and once it's agreed you'll get a Stripe invoice you can pay from your phone. Nothing is charged before you approve the design.
